By May, the kitchen starts changing before I even realize it’s happening.
The heavy winter meals slowly disappear. The soup pot gets pushed farther back on the stove, there are strawberries on the counter again, even if they aren’t quite sweet enough yet because everyone gets excited and buys them too early anyway. Somebody cuts fresh herbs from outside and leaves little pieces of mint and basil scattered beside the sink. The windows stay open longer, and every breeze carries in the smell of rain, grass, or whatever is beginning to bloom nearby.
Spring kitchens never look perfectly put together, which is probably why I love them so much.
A floral tablecloth appears again after spending months folded away in a drawer. Muddy garden shoes sit by the back door because someone ran outside “just for a minute” to check on the plants and came back an hour later. There’s usually a lemon cake somewhere on the counter this time of year, or blueberry muffins cooling beneath a dish towel while tea water boils.
Everything feels lighter in spring, even the way people move around the kitchen.
Winter cooking always feels practical to me. Spring cooking feels hopeful. People start making food that belongs near open windows. Simple pasta with herbs. Strawberry shortcake. Egg salad sandwiches eaten outside because it suddenly feels tragic to waste good weather indoors after such a long winter.
I also think spring light changes kitchens completely. Around five or six in the evening, sunlight starts pouring through the windows again instead of disappearing before dinner. The sink glows gold. The tea cups look prettier somehow. Even ordinary things like sliced lemons sitting on a cutting board begin looking like little still-life paintings. No matter how messy the kitchen is, spring makes it feel charming instead of chaotic.
Nothing matches perfectly, and that’s part of the magic of it.
The cottage kitchen in spring feels alive again.
