October seems to have its own language, and somehow we all understand it without ever being taught. We know it in the first morning that’s cold enough for a sweater, in the smell of somebody’s chimney before we can even see the house, and in the sound of dry leaves following us down the sidewalk. There are certain things that belong so completely to this month that they almost deserve definitions of their own, so, in case October ever needs translating, here is my dictionary of it.

October keeps leaving little things around for us to find. Most of them won’t last very long. Maybe that’s the whole point.

Happy October, friends. I hope you notice something good today.
